Where are we heading? That’s a great question to start with. Since you are reading this online, you are likely familiar with the concept of overconsumption for likes, content, and profit.
It's astonishing how much content on social media focuses on product restocking and haul videos, and people seem to enjoy these "satisfying" clips. Whether it's someone refilling shelves with cleaning supplies, snacks, or beauty products, or people constantly purchasing new clothes for a haul, viewers willingly invest their time and likes in these videos.
Have we been "victims" of these types of videos? Yes! It’s okay to admit that because being mindful in a world where content is designed to capture our attention is not easy. Social media is designed to pull us in just when we thought we were out(Godfather reference). We are constantly exposed to overconsumption and "ideal" lifestyles that can influence our desires without us even realising it.
But let's ask ourselves: Where do all these products end up? What happens to all this packaging? Do we need so many things? All of this just for views? Just to make money?
Constant production and shipping. For what cost?
It really makes you think twice about what’s truly necessary in life...
Digital people, be brave and stop watching those videos. Take control of what you expose yourself to. Scrolling can be addictive, but actively choosing not to engage with certain content can help with what is being created.
You are better than this. We are better than this.
You've been cool'd!
