We’re living in the Digital Age, which has its perks, especially in key areas like health and education. However, it also comes with some serious downsides, like the negative impact of digital pollution on the environment.
Did you know that storing just 1 terabyte of data in the cloud creates a carbon footprint of 2 tonnes a year? Or, that a single data centre uses the same amount of electricity as can power up to 50,000 homes? So much so that nowadays, data storage accounts for more carbon emissions than the commercial airline industry!
The good news is, we can all help cut down on this digital pollution. Some easy steps can make a difference, such as backing up our photos and files and regularly deleting them from cloud storage, deleting old emails, unsubscribing from newsletters that no longer interest us, or avoiding sending emails with "reply to all".
We encourage you to read our article on "Low-waste digital storage" for a deeper dive on the subject.
Every little action counts, so let’s do our part to make a difference for the planet!
You've been cool'd!
