Cigarette butts are the most common form of waste. It is estimated that around 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are discarded worldwide each year.
But how harmful can these tiny things be?
Cigarette filters are made of a plastic called cellulose acetate. When tossed into the environment, they can take up to 10 years to break down, leaking toxic chemicals into the soil and water as they do.
They also pose a significant threat to life in various terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems because organisms mistake them for food and ingest them, and they can start accidental fires.
You may have heard about biodegradable cigarette filters...how they work is another subject. The point we want to make is to focus on changing our behaviour and not to excuse it.
It's not just about the products we use, but also about the actions we take, like making sure we put out our cigarettes and having a pocket ashtray with us.
Throwing it away, like in the movies, is not cool, nor are you.
You've been cool'd!
