If you've never fed bread to ducks in a park, raise your hand.
Feeding ducks and other animals is actually a terrible human habit, often encouraged by everyone. It's unhealthy and potentially dangerous for the birds.
Foods like bread and crackers have no nutritional value to ducks and can cause malnutrition and painful deformities when consumed too much. And it can also lead to overpopulation or loss of natural behaviours. Which then may even become dangerous for us humans, not only for safety reasons but also for public health.
So next time, don't ignore the signs prohibiting the feeding of ducks or geese. Leave that to those who manage the parks where the birds live.
Giving Water to Injured Animals
When it comes to an injured animal, our first instinct might be to offer water. However, this might not always be the best course of action. In fact, providing water to an animal that appears to be in distress may seem compassionate, but it's not always the immediate priority. Depending on the situation and the type of injury, managing the animal's injuries and ensuring it receives appropriate medical attention precedes hydration.
Contact a wildlife rehabilitation centre or a veterinarian for guidance on how to proceed.
Remember, while your intention to help is admirable, ensuring the safety and well-being of both yourself and the injured animal should always be the top priority.
You've been cool'd!
