Colourful Animals

Updated: Aug 24

Cartoon figure with a mug on a green background, large text "LESSONS FROM THE WILD" with yellow brush strokes. Calm mood.

Did you know animals use colour for various communication purposes, such as attracting mates, facilitating parent-offspring communication, keeping warm, and recognising individuals?

Colours play a crucial role in reproduction across the animal kingdom. Species ranging from birds and reptiles to amphibians and insects often seek out the most colourful mates, which are usually the males, to produce offspring.

In contrast, females tend to have more earthy colours, making them less noticeable to predators and enhancing the species' chances of survival.

Some examples of colourful male animals include the Peacock, Mandarin Duck, Common Pheasant, Panther Chameleon, Eurasian Bullfinch, Western Capercaillie, and Manakins.

So, what lesson can we take from here?

Dunno.

Colours are a natural, universal form of expression, not something that should be limited by norms. Colours are for everyone.
